The Sea Shadow is an experimental stealth ship designed by the US Navy, Lockheed and DARPA ( Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency). The Sea Shadow was ordered in 1982 to examine the applicability of stealth technology on naval vessels as well as a test bed for automatic on-board systems to reduce the number of crew members. The Phalanx close-in defense system was first fitted to the USS Coral Sea in 1980 and is actually a 20 mm M61 Vulcan (Gatling-type) rotary cannon which is controlled by a system that acquires and tracks possible threats by radar.
Initially the system was able to fire only 3000 rounds per minute, but that improved as the Block 1, 1A and 1B came into play with upgraded radar, control systems, new sensors (FLIR) and rates of fire up to 7000 rpm.

A new Gabriel family anti-ship missile is developed by IAI (Israel Aerospace Industry). The new missile named Gabriel 5 will give a better performance than most contemporary missiles especially when employed in littoral waters.
Gabriel 5 is in the same class as Exocet and Harpoon missiles and is designed to serve as a primary armament for naval vessels. The new missile is an evolution of an earlier version which replaced the Gabriel 2 in the Israel Navy service. (Read more…)
