60 years ago, history recorded the first time when a man exceeded the speed of sound in controlled and level flight.

On October 14, 1947, US Air Force Captain Charles “Chuck” Yeager smashed the sound barrier aided by the Bell X-1, the first of many X-planes to come.

Lockheed Martin F-16 Block 50/52/60

Writing by Tolip on Wednesday, 10 of October , 2007 at 1:13 pm

The Lockheed Martin F-16 Block 50/52/60 represents a further step in the evolution of the F-16 Fighting Falcon multirole jet fighter. There are many new modifications, most of them internally, but the biggest change visible to the eye is the pair of removable conformal fuel tanks and a dorsal avionics compartment that make the new Falcon one of the ugliest jets ever.

Black Ops: American pilots flying Russian aircraft during the Cold War

Writing by Tolip on Thursday, 4 of October , 2007 at 8:25 pm

In the late 1960’s a secret program was undertaken by the US Air Force and Navy to evaluate flight characteristics of soviet built aircraft. The US acquired aircraft, radar systems, missiles as well as other hardware from friendly nations (Israel,Egypt, etc.) or aircraft used by their pilots to defect. The program continued until the early 1990’s, when the fall of the Soviet Union led to the end of the Cold War. (Read more…)

Microwave heat-ray weapon unveiled by US military

Writing by Cristian on Tuesday, 25 of September , 2007 at 7:18 pm

I once was curious enough to put a finger above a hole in my microwave oven. The result? A pleasant heat wave, similar to that of opening a oven door, hits you. Now imagine this feeling but instead of a pleasant heat wave, a burning sensation.

This is the weapon that is expected to enter service in 2010 mainly a crowd disperser. It uses powerful microwaves at 95 GHz, that pass through your clothes without setting them on fire, and heat the water molecules of which your body is formed. The microwaves are not strong enough to cause severe burns, but rather to give the nerves under your skin a touch of pain, at a relative temperature of 50 degrees Celsius. (Read more…)

A-10 Thunderbolt II Warthog

Writing by Cristian on Wednesday, 5 of September , 2007 at 8:38 pm

The A-10 Thunderbolt II (nicknamed Warthog) is one of my favorite American military planes. Why is that? Well it’s partly because of it’s unusual look, and partly because of its trademark 30mm GAU-8 Gatling gun. Its gun is also its trademark, shooting up to 70 uranium depleted rounds every second!

When it first came out in 1976, part of the army didn’t have much faith in the beginning in the A-10 Thunderbolt II, because they preferred high flying, high tech airplanes like the F-15 and F-16 with precision munition. (Read more…)

AH-64 Apache attack helicopter

Writing by Cristian on Monday, 6 of August , 2007 at 6:33 pm

The Apache AH-64 helicopter is the current workhorse of the US Military. The need for an attack helicopter started after the war in Vietnam when a lot of Huey helicopters were fitted with attack rockets. Although the Huey did its job properly as an armed transport helicopter, as an attach chopper it left a bitter taste, over 5000 people dying in it!

Thus the Apache was created. The first one flew in 1975, and after proving its worth, in 1983 the assembly line started rolling aircraft after aircraft at a price of 18 million US dollars.
