The IAR 93 Vultur (Eagle) is a single seat, twin engine, subsonic close support, ground attack and tactical reconnaissance aircraft. The program started in 1970 under original project name YUROM as a joint-venture between the Romanian INCAS institute and Yugoslavian VTJ engineers to meet requirements of both air forces.The two single-seat prototypes made simultaneous first flights on October 31 1974.The Yugoslavian aircraft was named SOKO/VTJ-J-ORAO.
There are many estimates as to how many IAR 93s were produced with figures ranging from 80 to 150.

The world’s most powerful vacuum bomb has been tested by the russians.The bomb unleashes a destructive shockwave with the power of a nuclear blast.

The bomb is the latest in a series of new Russian weapons and policy moves as President Vladimir Putin tries to reassert Moscow’s role on the international stage.The defence ministry stresses this military invention does not contradict a single international treaty. Russia is not unleashing a new arms race

Russian strategic bombers out on patrol

On August 17 the long-range divisions of Russia’s Air Force resumed patrolling of remote areas over the North Eastern Atlantic, the Norwegian and Northern Seas, the Sea of Japan, and the North Pole.Russia resumes long range patrols using the Tupolev Tu-95 Bear after nearly 15 years of inactivity.

Osprey Squadron for Iraq

The first V-22 Osprey combat squadron has been deployed by the Marines in Iraq.The V-22 Osprey is the world’s first operational tilt-rotor aircraft.10 Ospreys along with the Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 263 left Monday aboard the USS Wasp from New River Air Station next to Camp Lejeune.About 200 marines comprise a typical marine squadron.The “Thunder Chickens” is the name of the squadron and the 20 pilots that form up the squadron are to spend the next 7 months or so ferrying troops, supplies and cargo.

F-14 Tomcat Fighter Fling series

From 1974 to 2006 the Grumman F-14 Tomcat represented the backbone of the United States Navy.This two-seat, two-engine, supersonic variable geometry wing aircraft first flew on 21 December 1970, entering service with the US Navy in 1972, replacing the aging F-4 Phantom II. The Tomcat was designed as an air superiority fighter as well as fleet defense and reconnaissance platform.

A-10 Warthog videos

I posted on Metacafe two videos I had sitting on my hard drive from who knows when, hoping that those of you who enjoy this blog will have two cool videos to see featuring the A-10 Warthog.
First video is a formation of A-10 flying above the clouds and showing off. The second video features an exercise, with the A-10 destroying all kinds of targets. Hope you’ll like them! Enjoy!

A-10 Thunderbolt II Warthog

The A-10 Thunderbolt II (nicknamed Warthog) is one of my favorite American military planes. Why is that? Well it’s partly because of it’s unusual look, and partly because of its trademark 30mm GAU-8 Gatling gun. Its gun is also its trademark, shooting up to 70 uranium depleted rounds every second!

When it first came out in 1976, part of the army didn’t have much faith in the beginning in the A-10 Thunderbolt II, because they preferred high flying, high tech airplanes like the F-15 and F-16 with precision munition. (Read more…)
