I plan to use it to transport myself around the Ukraine on business.

What price should I expect to pay. My wife is Ukrainian ans speaks fluet Russian so we can deal with the Goverment and/or Military directly.

Just be careful if you are a serious buyer to inspect the goods onsite yourself and have the aircraft AND engines examined by a certified A/P mechanic.

Ive never bought one of these aircraft but but as an aircraft engineer, private pilot and having been around airplanes and flying for nearly 30 years, I can tell you that there is more here than meets the eye.

1) you’re buying an aircraft that was never intended for possession by a single owner/pilot and were intended from the engineering drawings up to be operated by large governments with very deep pocketbooks an have swarms of enlisted technicians that can devote themselves to the high amount of maintenance required per flight hour.

2) If these same governments are selling them back to the public, it means that they’ve upgraded to a superior aircraft and this airplane they’re selling you is nothing more than a geriatric derilect being sold to cannibalize for spare parts, then melt it into soda cans. If you think you’re gonna buy a MiG-17 for $35,000 USD and fly it tomorrow, you’ve got another thing coming. Shell out the cash, and you have little more than a cool looking paperweight in a hangar somewhere that going to take a lot of cash to get it airworthy again.. For those jets, you will be lucky to have a flyable airplane for under $2 million USD.

3) You are purchasing a weapons system, which will require a lot of work and money on your behalf outside of the purchase price to cut through the brueaucratic red tape and make the necessary major overhauls to the airframe to ensure it complies with current ITAR regulations.

4) In aviation, always remember, that the purchase price is just the beginning. Make sure you are accounting for the operating costs which are going to be prohibitive. The small jets are going to cost about $2,500 per hour to operate while the larger ones eg MiG-29, Su-27, etc. will cost in the neighborhood of $5000-$6000, provided you operate the jet conservatively. Light the afterburners, do a lot of high energy maneuvers, and your operating costs skyrocket from there. You will quickly find yourself spending $60,000-$80,000 just for a few hours of flying. And let’s not forget maintenance. A large turbine aircraft like those listed here with with two jet engines, hydraulics, LOX generators, ejection seats, etc. are going to be down for a lot of hours per hour of flight time and with the average shop charging about $80/per hour for maintenance your pocketbook will be taking a beating both in the air and on the ground. And God help you when it comes time to overhaul the engines (~$400,000 per engine). And spare parts for a Tumansky jet engine aren’t exactly something your neighborhood FBO readily stocks.

I’m not trying to be a killjoy here. If you really want a high performance military jet and have a realistic financial means to do so, go for it. Just do your research and don’t be lured by the sticker price alone.
